Elections 2014: Financial capital chooses NDA, AAP fails to pose a challenge

MUMBAI: Mumbai turned saffron with a vengeance, just one election after it blanked out the Shiv Sena-BJP combine from its map. NDA swept all six seats, with both partners bagging three each.

A combination of factors led to the Congress-NCP rout, which has been a once-in-atwo-decades phenomenon in Mumbai; the city ousted Congress in 1977, repeated the washout 19 years later in 1996 and did it again 18 years later.

The two important factors would have to be the Modi wave and the anti-incumbency sentiment playing overtime. Congress and NCP candidates have had to bear the cross of the voters' anger against the UPA-II government, if not against themselves. What made the outcome certain was a simultaneous, almost-en-bloc gravitation of these anti-incumbent votes towards NDA.

These twin forces were so strong that it made the potential spoilers entirely irrelevant to the final result. MNS, which helped the Congress-NCP combine get a tennis set-like, 6-0 margin last time, has struggled to retain its own voter base. It played the role of a passive ally to BJP, refusing to field candidates in the BJP seats. But Raj Thackeray's party failed to spoil even cousin Uddhav Thackeray's party in the three seats where Sena candidates were the NDA representatives.

AAP was reduced to a footnote. It, however, has its supporters—in some seats it has approximated MNS levels but it has a long way to go to even become a serious spoiler.

Election results 2014: Maharashtra minister Narayan Rane quits after son defeated in Lok Sabha polls

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 16 Mei 2014 | 22.23

MUMBAI: Controversial industries minister Narayan Rane has resigned from the state cabinet on moral grounds following humiliating defeat of his son Neelesh Rane from Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg parliamentary constituency. According to reports, besides Rane, Nagpur guardian minister and employment guarantee minister Nitin Raut too has resigned following defeat of Nagpur Congress nominee Vilas Muttemwar. Rane, who submitted his resignation to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, may not only quit Congress, but even quit politics in near future.

Neelesh, a sitting Lok Sabha member from Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, was defeated by Shiv Sena nominee Vinayak Raut by a huge margin. Ever since the Congress declared the candidature of Neelesh, local NCP leaders led by Sawantwadi legislator Deepak Kesarkar had raised a banner of revolt against his nomination. Kesarkar and his supporters made it clear to the NCP leadership that they will not campaign for Neelesh and instead, ensure his defeat. In a major damage control exercise, both NCP president Sharad Pawar and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar stepped in to pacify agitating Kesarkar, but failed to tackle the situation. For Pawar, more shocking was the fact that the entire Kesarkar team boycotted his meeting in Kankavali, home town of Rane. Subsequently, Rane too made an unsuccessful attempt for a truce with Kesarkar, but he too did not succeed. Now from the outcome of the results, it appears that Kesarkar did succeed in his strategy to defeat Rane's son.

Ever since Rane quit the Shiv Sena and joined the Congress in June 2006, he always felt that it was his political blunder to join the Congress. When he was negotiating his entry into the Congress, he was told that sooner or later, he will be considered for the chief minister's post, but he was never given an opportunity.

Rane was expecting that after Vilasrao Deshmukh was asked to quit in the wake of the terror attack, he will be considered, but then the high command chose Ashok Chavan. When Sonia Gandhi sacked Ashok Chavan following his involvement in the Adarsh scam, again Rane was expecting that he will be given a chance to lead the state, but Prithviraj Chavan was appointed. "Rane feel that he has lost crucial eight years of his life. Now, it's better to quit Congress and politics too," a senior Congress minister said.

Medha Patkar complains of possible poll rigging

MUMBAI: A complaint filed by Medha Patkar, social activist and Aam Aadmi Party candidate for the Mumbai North East constituency points to the possibility of a rigging of votes in her constituency. Her complaint with the election commission states that an address tag used to identify an EVM machine was found on the streets of Mumbai.

"An address tag used on the control unit at polling station No 29 at the Shivaji Nagar/Mankhurd assembly segment of the Mumbai North East parliamentary constituency was found on the road at Shivaji Nagar today. This address tag is an important identifier of the machine used on the day of polling and the tag being found on the road indicates that the machine could have been tampered with before being transported to the place of storage after the elections," says a statement released by AAP.

The complaint, filed with the returning officer, has urged him not to start the counting for this booth till an investigation of the matter has taken place.

AAP has also alleged that the serial number of the paper seals used to seal the control units have not been recorded in Form 17C, in violation of Election Commission.
