MUMBAI: A day after suspending Nagpur jail superintendent Vaibhav Kamble, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday entrusted the probe into the jail break episode to anti-corruption bureau director Pravin Dixit. For Fadnavis, it was an embarrassing situation since Nagpur is home town.

"It's a serious matter, five hardened criminals escaped from the high security Nagpur central jail. It can't happen without the connivance of the jail staff. I have asked Dixit to probe into the entire episode and submit a report within a month," Fadnavis told ToI.

Fadnavis said it was unfortunate that despite 51 specific complaints against Kamble, the previous Congress-NCP government did not take action against him. "I am told that there were several serious complaints against the Jail superintendent for dereliction of duty, but no action was taken," Fadnavis said.

A senior bureaucrat said three gangsters, Bisen Singh, Mohammed Saleb Salim and Satyedra Gupta, booked under the Maharashtra control of organised crime act, Prem Nepali, facing charges under the arms act and Akash Golu booked for robbery, escaped from the Nagpur central jail on March 31. "Prima facie, it appears that it was a planned operation and that officials of Nagpur jail must have helped the criminals. We expect that Dixit will probe into all aspects of the episode," he said.

The bureaucrat said Fadnavis has expressed strong displeasure over the jail administration. First it was the actor Sanjay Dutt episode and it was followed by more shocking jail break incident. In case of Dutt, despite the fact that he did not return to the Pune jail after his furlough period expired, no steps were taken against him. ``Jail administration woke up only after a section of the media high lighted as to how Dutt was still out of jail despite the fact that his furlough period was over. Jail administration is yet to fix the responsibility in the Dutt episode,'' he said.

Now the Nagpur jail episode has created an embarrassing situation for the CM, who is already at the receiving end for sudden spurt in crimes in the second capital. "We have been told that all the gangsters were kept in the same barrack. Our officials appear to be mixed with the criminals," he said.

The bureaucrat said while Kamble has been suspended, more heads will role in the jail administration for dereliction of duty. "The proposal for suspension of Kamble was moved only after Fadnavis stepped in," he said.
