Thaneites relish fairy tale cupcakes for Easter

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 20 April 2014 | 22.23

THANE: Churches in Thane began Easter celebrations on Saturday night and on Sunday, most of them saw around 4,000 to 5,000 devout Christians gathering for the morning services.

This festival is a very important one for Thaneites. Father Elias D'Souza of Our Lady of Mercy Church, Pokhran Road, says, "In our church, there was a service at 8 am and another at 9.15 am today." Ashley Misquitta, the secretary of the church says, "Easter is more significant than Christmas. It is purely religious and is a celebration of the victory of life over death. It is about the celebration of Christ's resurrection. The Easter egg depicts potential for life. It is about the rebirth of Jesus Christ, so it can be called a symbolic representation."

There are around five to six stalls put up on the Our Lady of Mercy Church premises, that will have Easter eggs and home-made goodies. A regular churchgoer and devout follower, Kasber Augustine says, "Apart from the religious ceremonies during Holy Week —the week preceding Easter Sunday — almost everyone makes Easter eggs at home. It is a huge celebration."

Father Allwyn D'Silva, the parish priest of St John the Baptist Church, says, "We had a service last night and this morning we had special masses at 6, 7, 8 and 9.15 am. Families in Thane will be blessing their homes with Holy Water today afternoon."

Youngsters are organizing a treasure hunt, which they have called the Easter Egg hunt, post the service. Says Father D'Silva, "There will be a sale of goodies and souvenirs in the premises and the proceeds will go to home for the aged. And on Friday, April 25, there will be a musical event to collect money for the same."

Oxygen therapy breathes new life into woman in a coma

MUMBAI: When Sonabai Morasker boards a bus for Shippur village near Kolhapur on April 25, she will leave without the memory of four days she spent in a state of unconsciousness—or coma— in a city hospital. A widow who manages her tiny farm back home, Morasker had failed to "wake up" after the effects of the anaesthesia wore off following an open heart surgery to replace a leaky mitral valve in February.

An MRI scan showed the culprit—air bubbles, or air embolism, in her brain. With Morasker showing no signs of improvement even after four days, doctors at L H Hiranandani Hospital in Powai placed her in an oxygen chamber. And in what could pass off for the script of a Bollywood blockbuster, within 15 minutes of receiving oxygen therapy, the 42-year-old woman opened her eyes and wanted to know where she was.

When TOI met Morasker in her rented room in Kharghar last week, she had no recollection of the drama that unfolded on February 2. "I remember the operation theatre's bright lights before closing my eyes. The next thing was I opened my eyes in a similar room," she said.

Her son-in-law Prakash Kesarkar said she hadn't realized that four days had passed between the two incidents. "Immediately after she came around, the doctor asked her if she recognized me. She said, 'This is my Prakash'," he recalled.

Hiranandani Hospital doctors are amazed at Morasker's "complete" recovery. "Her neurological examination after a month of discharge showed that she hasn't suffered any brain damage," said Dr Vaishnav Manmath, who specializes in hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It is rare that air bubbles detected in a person's do not cause any damage.

Morasker suffers from rheumatic heart disease, a condition in which the heart gets damaged due to a bacterial infection in childhood. She couldn't walk even a few steps without getting breathless. "The sarpanch gave us a letter and recommended that we come to Hiranandani Hospital for free treatment," said Prakash.

Accordingly, Morasker underwent a valve replacement at the Powai hospital on February 2. The next morning, the ICU nurses informed her family that she hadn't "woken up" after the surgery. "We were shattered as we waited for doctors to go through a series of tests and treatment," Prakash said.

According to doctors, air bubbles can occur due to a number of reasons—from being strapped to a heart-lung machine to fixing of an intravenous line. Cardiologist Dr Ameya Amonkar said, "There is no way of pinning down a reason for air bubbles. As hyperbaric oxygen is the best treatment it, we immediately recommended her for it." According to Dr Manmath, as oxygen was being delivered under pressure, the air bubbles in Morasker's brain got dissolved into the blood plasma.

The medical world, however, is a bit skeptical. "If the woman has no brain damage even after bubbles stopped blood flow to her brain for four days, it means that she is plain lucky," said a doctor from Nair Hospital who didn't want to be identified.

Dr Sangeeta Rawat, who heads the neurological department of KEM Hospital in Parel, said, "It seems like a mystery. How was it that there was no brain damage despite there being no blood supply for so long?" She felt the coma was perhaps induced by "some metabolic reason" such as lack of some electrolytes rather than air bubbles.

However, Sonabai is blissfully unaware of all the medical nuances. She's happy that she can now "walk fast" and "climb stairs without having to stop".

Varsity-affiliated colleges refuse to host exams

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 19 April 2014 | 22.23

MUMBAI: Affiliated colleges have refused to host university examinations for lack of time, space and resources. Various departments have now been asked to conduct the exam for their students on the campus. But the arrangement is causing chaos. For instance, the journalism school, which held its master's exam last Thursday, put its students through torture as the exam centres were changed late on Wednesday.

Following that, the exam time for the semester-1 paper —communication theory—was pushed from 11am to 3pm. Of the 80-odd students, 60 were asked to take the exam in affiliated colleges—Saraf College, K J Somaiya College and K C College. Close to 18 other examinees took the paper from the conference room of the university's health centre. "We received a phone call about our exam centre on Wednesday night.

A day before the exam, we had no clue about where we had to go to sit for our paper," said a candidate. Some students received messages on Whatsapp. Several other departments which used to ask colleges to play host as centres are now looking for space on the Kalina campus. "So many departments are short of staff and many don't even have their own lecture halls and work out stopgap arrangements. Also, most lecture halls in the university are not suitable for hosting exams as the benches are on the steps in the auditorium fashion," said a former head of a department.

New rules state that colleges have refused to conduct the smaller exams as they feel that it is difficult to depute staff members and set aside space for a handful of students. "While we do offer master's courses at our colleges, we find it difficult to reserve space and set aside staff for a handful of people who have signed up with the university," said a principal. The matter was raised with the academic council in November last year. In March, the university sent a circular to all departments asking them to conduct the exam with their own resources on the univ campus.

Mumbai candidates better off with their better half

MUMBAI: Despite the cynicism about politicians all around, the fact is, they do have their better halves. And almost all of Mumbai's Lok Sabha candidates are vouching for their spouse's support during the strenuous election campaign. This support has made their gruelling constituency trails easier, and in some cases, gone beyond just being a morale-booster: partners are helping candidates plan and strategise their campaigns so that they can cover the constituency in minimal time and get their message across clearly and concisely.

At the same time, in a role reversal of sorts, some of the male partners of women candidates have been taking care of the home front and ensuring the children are looked after.

Meera Sanyal, AAP candidate from Mumbai South, for instance, is one of the luckiest candidates: her husband, brother and mother have all stepped in to help. Her husband, Ashish, who runs a retail consultancy and lectures at management institutes, has taken a break from work and works as her campaign director.

"My husband brings insights from the world of business and marketing. We treat voters as consumers of services, not as votebanks," she says, adding that he has no vested interests, is good with people and stays calm through the heat of the campaign.

Her brother Dr Manek Hiranandani, a doctor who runs a hospital in Kerala, is currently in Mumbai working as her election agent, dealing with the Election Commission to ensure relevant documents are submitted on time and that the campaign adheres to EC guidelines. And her mother is working on door-to-door campaigns.

MP and Congress candidate from Mumbai North-Central Priya Dutt's husband, 43-year-old Owen Roncon, a partner in a music promotion company and a marketing firm, is currently playing, in his own words, surrogate mother. He is looking after their two sons. "That is my most important job," he says. But that's not all. He is also involved in planning her campaign. He says his wife's best quality is her "heart of gold". "She genuinely cares about the welfare of people. She has no other reason to be in politics," he claims. At present, the couple's day begins at 6.30am and never seems to end. "It merges into the morning," Roncon says.

Sanjay Nirupam, Congress candidate from Mumbai North, has his Maharashtrian wife Geeta to thank for facilitating communication with Marathi-speaking voters. A homemaker, she vigorously campaigns among the womenfolk. "I engage the women in Marathi," she says. Even when Nirupam is unable to reach a scheduled meeting in time as he is busy elsewhere, Geeta steps in and addresses the public.

Their daughter Shivani is holding youth rallies, apart from assisting her father in his social media campaign. She even created an Android application for him.

Milind Deora's wife Pooja Shetty-Deora, 35, joint managing director, Walkwater Media, is an entrepreneur in her own right. But she supports the Mumbai South Congress candidate's back-end team which has many professionals and experts in it. She is, however, modest about her contribution. "I do make suggestions and sometimes steer conversations in a certain direction," she says.

Minal, wife of AAP candidate for Mumbai North West Mayank Gandhi, is a clinical psychologist by profession and thus well-equipped to help him deal with a high-pressure campaign. She accompanies him on the campaign trail every day, plying him with food and an array of juices and taking care of him generally. His son, a doctor, has taken a break to work for him, and his son's fiance has come down from Gujarat to support him. While his daughter and son-in-law are both in government service and therefore unable to campaign for him, his son-in-law's parents travel to Mumbai from Pune to offer help.

For Medha, wife of BJP candidate from Mumbai North-East Kirit Somaiya, election time is exciting as she says she is herself a party worker first, having been to prison at the age of 15 during the Emergency. She is also BJP Mumbai unit vice-president, while their son is general secretary of the party's youth wing. She says she is "in charge of the campaign in an entire ward, number 101. I am also interested in the EC's workings and help party workers with work related to the EC. At the same time, I ensure Kirit eats and sleeps well."

The family of Satish Jain, AAP candidate from Mumbai North, has moved base from south Mumbai to Kandivli because Jain is working towards building a base for the party in north Mumbai not just for the LS polls but for the assembly elections too.

His wife Meenal is in charge of his campaign. She works out his daily schedule and goes door-to-door with him through the narrow gullies of his constituency, broom in hand, exhorting women from each locality to vote for the 'jhadoo.' She also helps him secure the many permissions needed for rallies and manages the campaign when they're running behind schedule.
