Attach car, furniture of Kalyan civic chief: Court

KALYAN: A sessions court has recently passed an order to attach the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) chief's furniture and vehicle for failure to comply with directions to remove encroachments on a Christian burial ground.

In 1994, the civic body earmarked a plot for a cemetery at MIDC in Dombivli east.

Since the land was occupied by squatters, an NGO, Christians for Social Welfare, moved the Kalyan sessions court in 2007.

In April 2012, the court directed the KDMC to remove encroachments. In 2012, the civic body sought a one-year period to remove the encroachments. When the civic corporation failed to honour its commitment, the community moved the court again in 2013. Then the KDMC demanded 10 additional days to get rid of the squatters but failed to keep its promise following which the NGO filed a contempt of court plea against the civic body. In the February 23 order, Justice AB Marlecha of Kalyan sessions court stated that it became necessary to attach property of the civic chief.
