Despite being one of the oldest colleges in the suburbs, Khalsa has never been able to enhance its quality of education and experts blame it on poor leadership. The college, however, has excelled in sports, particularly hockey, as the long list of Olympian alumni (see box) testify.
"The news about demanding donation is not shocking. Khalsa college and Ajit Singh are known to demand donations. There are several such colleges," said a principal from a suburban college that has done away with its management quota.
Controversies are not new to Teti. The chancellor of state universities has appointed a committee to look into irregularities in staff appointment in the last 15-20 years at the college. The irregularities came to light after Teti suspended an assistant professor, whose husband filed several RTIs and collected data on dubious hiring processes. "Some teachers who only had an annual approval from the university were given extensions by the college. In some cases, no proper selection committees were appointed," said a source.
In 2006, a police complaint was lodged against Teti and the college for not releasing Rs 33 lakh the state government gave as scholarship for reserved category students. When home minister R R Patil intervened, Teti decided to release the sum.
Many say that despite complaints against Teti, the college management has not taken action against him. "He has political backing from the Congress, hence he went on to become a (university) senate member," said another principal. He was on the management council and on the academic council, too.
