Railway commuters vent their anger at Mumbra station

MUMBAI: The city's rail commuters have always been a harried lot. Stretched to its limits, Mumbai's suburban rail network has hardly been able to augment its infrastructure to keep up with the crush load.

Although its commendable of the railways to maintain and operate a total network of over 400 kms, its attitude towards the travelling public is quite apathetic. On Monday, several hundred commuters vented their anger and staged a rail rook at Mumbra station during peak hours, leading to cancellation of a few trains. The reason: wrong announcements by the rail staff which confused the passengers.

A regular commuter on the suburban network knows it only to well. Often, announcements of a train's arrival are made when it has already departed. At times, the announcer informs waiting passengers about the arrival of a train on platform number 1 while it actually enters a different platform, forcing people to rush from one end of the station to another.

Facilities at stations are also primitive. Broken stair cases, encroachers, filthy toilets and non-functioning indicators.

It is time that the railways have a zero-tolerance policy on these issues. Instead of pandering to populist measures, the rail ministry should boost investment in laying new tracks and augment the creaking infrastructure.
