The BEST staffers had gone on strike early Tuesday morning to protest against the implementation of computerized scheduling (of duties) at the depots.
The strike was called off after the management agreed to postpone the implementation of the new computerized schedule to June 1. Sources said that the management will now discuss the issue with the unions and workers, and seek feedback before implementing the system. The system will, however, be implemented at the Malad depot from next month.
A driver said that the new schedule involved 12-13 hour spread-over duties, which will be strenuous both mentally and physically for any driver. "This is besides the travel time taken to reach from your home to the depot," he pointed out. "The rest rooms are in pathetic condition. There is no space to sleep, the rest rooms are next to stinking toilets at many places. Also, we have raised objections to drivers getting multiple bus routes on the same day," he stated.
Union leader Sharad Rao said his union had backed the workers though he had personally not called for the strike.
"This time, the workers had decided to stand united and they had gone in protest on their own. It was a big success for them. Our union also demanded that there should be changes in the new automated system as it will affect the health of our workers. You can't expect these drivers and conductors to work for such longer hours and lose contact with family life," he added.
