Young women in many a village community like India are taking a forefront in peer education and busting myths about contraceptives. This is backed by trained frontline health workers, many of whom are also women. An estimated 220 million women around the globe however, still lack access to family planning. "Women fight for themselves and their families because they know it is a matter of life versus death," said Melinda Gates, Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in a press note, calling for solidarity to fight with women across communities for "as long as it takes".
"Women leaders have indispensable roles to play in ensuring access to family planning," said Roman Tesfaye, First Lady of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in a press note. "Women parliamentarians at the national level should spearhead new policies, provide adequate resources and advocate for full access to family planning," she added.
It is essential however, to realise that family planning cannot be regarded as a silo. The issue of gender-based equality should be tackled in a multi-disciplinarily holistic manner to ensure true development of women.
