MUMBAI: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence have busted a drugs smuggling racket. The agency seized 1.15kg heroin concealed in curtain rings while being smuggled out of the country through courier on Thursday night.

The heroin, valued at Rs 1.5 crore on the black market, was hidden inside 202 rings in two packets meant for Netherlands and China, officials said. The heroin was filled into tubes in the shape of rings and packed between metal coverings. "It appeared that the consignment contained curtains used in homes. Every ring contained around seven grams of the contraband," an official said.

Officials have identified a person believed to have played a key role in the racket. "The address of the sender turned out to be bogus. The consignee's address along with phone numbers has been mentioned. We are investigating some leads," an official said. Officials said they acted on an intelligence tip-off. "It would have been difficult to spot it since a scanner only shows that it contain metal," an official said. It took a day for the officers to extract the heroin from the rings.
