Hasmukh Dedhia, the accused, is the secretary of a housing society in Borivli West, where he lives with his wife and daughter. The 45-year-old had placed bets on cricket matches through a Mira Road-based bookie, Rajesh Giri and lost around Rs 16 lakh. Giri then sent his employee, Amarnath Yadav, 25, to prod Dedhia to return the money. Yadav, a recovery agent, would call Dedhia everyday demanding the money.
On Thursday, Yadav called Dedhia again and said he was coming to his residence to collect the money. Spotting Yadav on a two-wheeler, Dedhia requested him to meet on the terrace as his wife and daughter were asleep in his flat. Dedhia had a spare set of keys to the terrace.
"Dedhia gave Yadav a chair and left on the pretext of getting the money. But he sneaked behind Yadav and bludgeoned him with a sharp object," said ACP Sunil Deshmukh.
"On hearing the commotion, the society watchman rushed upstairs to find out what had happened. But Dedhia shooed him away."
Dedhia then cleaned up the bloodstains on the terrace and carefully wrapped the body in plastic. Dedhia left the body on the terrace overnight.
"He was aware that the Borivli park opens early for joggers. At 4am, Dedhia bundled Yadav's body into a Swift Dzire belonging to his brother. He entered the national park at 7.30am and drove on a road leading to the MSEB office. Changing tracks, he entered a forest and dumped the body in a pit. He then started to dispose off his bloodstained clothes and murder weapon," said a police official.
Around the same time, Raghunath Dalvi, a former senior inspector with the crime branch and currently posted at Sahar police station, was jogging on a path leading to the Kanheri Caves. He heard the murder weapon fall into the bushes and noticed bloodstained clothes in Dedhia's hands. As the cop stopped in his tracks, Dedhia got nervous and rushed back into his car, which was parked nearby.
"He started to drive away. I then got into my car and alerted the SGNP authorities to shut down the main entrance to trap him. I also called up the main control room and an officer from the Kasturba Marg police station," said Dalvi.
A team from the Kasturba Marg police station rushed to SGNP and took Dedhia into custody. He led the cops to the body. Officials said Yadav's room-mates had registered a missing complaint with the Dahisar police at 1am on Friday, when he did not return home. Yadav's family is based in UP.
Dedhia was arrested on charges of murder and the car seized for examination. On Friday afternoon, a forensic team went to SGNP to collect samples from the crime scene.
