On November 2 the Association is kicking of an eight day fully residential camp for 25 children, some as young as 8-years-old.
The BSA remains one of Mumbai's best kept secrets - a perfect getaway for the weary city dweller. Easily accessible by boat in less than an hour from Gateway of India, the Club is one of India's oldest sailing institutions. The Mandwa beach, ideal wind and tide conditions make it one of India's most pristine locations where people of all ages can learn to sail!
At the camp called the Green Horn Sailing Camp, each little sailor will get to sail two classes of boats- Optimist and the Topper.
Each Sailor will be allocated their "own" boat for the duration of the Camp. The Sailors will take complete care of these boats while they are at the Camp.
The camp which is full has children aged between 8 and 15 with varied skills.
One of the youngest sailors is Agastya Mehra, who at 8 years of age has seen his older sister Ananyaa (age 12) go out on the water and is looking forward to "riding" his own boat! He realizes that he will be able to "drive" his own boat much before he learns to drive his car. On the other end of the spectrum, is Vishnu Sujeesh (15 years) from Chennai who consistently ranks as one of India's top competitive sailors. Avanti Menon, (14) is specially coming from Bangalore to sail at one of her "favourite" locations in India. And Jai Vir Sabharwal (12), who comes from a sea faring family and is the third in his generation learnt to sail in Mandwa two years ago and is looking forward to moving to the bigger Topper boat.
The Topper Sailors will be coached by Adam Millington who is specially flying down from the UK, thanks to the Topper Class Association.
Four Mumbai based Arjuna Awardees and some of Asia's best Sailors have committed their time on a voluntary basis to conduct specialized Sailing Clinics for the BSA. In the past, they have all enjoyed their own sailing in Mandwa. They include Homi Motiwalla, Nitin Mongia, R. Mahesh and Aashim Mongia.
So what indeed is the lure of the sea? Abhilash Tomy, the first Indian to circumnavigate the globe on a solo sailing mission has in his blog aptly described the calm sea as "I woke up this morning to find a sea and sky that were merging at a horizon that was indistinguishable from one another. It was like living inside of a cotton ball. Yesterday the sea was so calm, in the evening that there were stars in the ocean and you couldn't tell which way was up and which way was down. Not a whiff of wind, not a ripple in the sea."
Children in Mumbai have a chance to enjoy the calmness and exhilarating adrenaline rush the sea can afford too.
