MUMBAI: In the first phase of a major shake-up in the state police force, director-general of police Pravin Dixit, who headed the police housing corporation, will take charge of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

DGP Arup Patnaik, who was heading the state security corporation, has been transferred as managing director of the Maharashtra police housing corporation. The two IPS officers got their new postings on Thursday. The state government is likely to announce the name of the new city police chief soon since the current incumbent, Satya Pal Singh, is due for promotion.Additional DGP (state traffic) Vijay Kamble and anti-terrorism squad chief Rakesh Maria are the contenders for the important post. There is speculation that a section in the government wants to appoint Kamble as Mumbai police chief to woo Dalit voters in the upcoming general election.

Some favour Maria who is credited with solving high-profile terror cases and has a clean image. Senior IPS officers have been complaining that the Maharashtra government is moving slowly on transfers of key police personnel.
