The Boisar MIDC police seized fake identity cards of 'Anti Corruption and Oppression Committee of India' from them.
Those arrested are Vinayak Jadhav (38), Harshal Save (31), Mahendra Jadhav (34) and Prashant Dev (28) all residents of Dahanu.
On October 2, they approached Hotel Panhara, Hotel Ruchira and Hotel Ganesh Prasad and accused the management of serving liquor on a 'Dry Day'.
The three hotelier's each paid Rs 15,000 to the four accused. A few days later, the matter was discussed in the meeting of the Boisar Bar and Restaurant Association.
The members decided to file a complaint with the excise department.
The excise department officials informed the hoteliers that no raid was conducted on October 2.
The hoteliers then approached the police.
The police found out during investigation that the men had posed as excise inspectors to extort money.
The hoteliers told the police that they were not serving liquor but paid the cash fearing future trouble by the excise department.
Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested the four men on Thursday. Four others managed to flee in a Tavera vehicle which they had hired from Dahanu to travel to Boisar for extorting money.
The four have been booked under section 384 (extortion) and impersonation (section 171) of the IPC. They have been remanded to police custody till Monday by the Palghar sessions court.
