Activists rally for affordable housing

MUMBAI: Activists from across Mumbai will launch a series of agitations to put affordable housing in Mumbai on the election manifesto of all political parties for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

On Saturday, activists launched a campaign urging all those who need a house to fill application forms. Available at Ram Nivas, Near ITC Hotel, Parel, these application forms would then be handed over to the state government, demanding affordable housing in the city.

Datta Iswalkar of the Girni Kamgaar Sangharsh Samiti said unaffordability has reached such heights that even the middle class can no longer afford a home in Mumbai's highrises. He said Mumbai's working class was being forcibly pushed out of the city and this needs to be stopped.

Academics have warned that creating an exclusive city will result in a very serious law and order situation akin to that in Latin American countries where even walking on the roads during daytime is dangerous.

Iswalkar said if mill-workers could get homes more than two decades later, others too can hope for the same provided they fight for it.

Agitations will be held outside every minister's bungalow demanding affordable housing.
