MUMBAI: In the wake of the recent building collapse in Mazagaon, the BMC will form a designated team of officials to re-survey dilapidated buildings across the city.

The team, which will comprise executive engineers from the estate, planning and design departments and wards, will conduct a visual inspection of buildings in C1 and C2 category.

In all, there are 95 buildings in the C1 category (dilapidated and in need of urgent demolition), 11 buildings in the C2 category (dangerous part of building needs to be demolished and repaired) and 40 in the C2A category (those in need of urgent repairs). Out of the 95 buildings that have been declared dilapidated and in need of demolition, the BMC has evacuated 54 and 14 are awaiting court directives.

"There will be a re-survey of all the buildings in the C1 and C2 categories. The team will decide if a structural audit is needed for these buildings, based on which they will be evacuated," said additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas.

The BMC has set a deadline for eviction of solid waste department employees from wing 1 of a dilapidated building on Dadasaheb Phalke Road in Dadar. The staff was given suspension notices for failing to evacuate the building, which was constructed in the 1970s and is home to conservancy staffers from F (north) and F (south) wards in Parel, Dadar, Matunga, Wadala, Antop Hill, Sion and parts of Dharavi.

"Wing 2 was evacuated on October 1. Evacuation of wing 1, besides disconnecting cutting of water and electricity supply, will take place on October 10. Workers living in containers will be asked to produce the necessary permissions and will be evicted," said Sanjay Kurhade, assistant municipal commissioner, F (south) ward.
