A high level inquiry has been ordered into confisticated smuggled goods seized by the Yellow Gate police station went missing from their custody recently. What has baffled the senior police officers is the fact that the seized dhow-MV Yusufi which is anchored was guarded by two policemen round the clock at Hey Bunder and shockingly just opposite the office of Indian customs and Mumbai Port Trust. The stealing of confisticated goods worth Rs 90 lakhs from Yusufi anchored at Hey Bunder has once again raised question over the coastal security particularly after 26/11.

In April the Yellow gate police on the tip off the coast guard had intercepted a Gujarat based M V Yusufi which sneaked illegally into Mumbai from Dubai the same way the ten terrorist sneaked into India in 2008.

The police found the vessel was used for smuggling cigarettes, electronic goods and 32 (goats) live stock total worth Rs 4.5 crore into the country. The dhow had come under suspicion after its crew spoke to their handlers in Dubai via the banned Thuraya satellite phone that was used by the 26/11 terrorists.Police arrested five persons who were in the dhow with the contraband. They were identified as Ahmed Paleja (45), Iqbal Umi (41), Yaqoob Thakara (43), Abdul Mandwani (32) and Yunus Bolim (31).

All the accused were booked under the Indian Telegraph Act, Cruelty to Animals Act, the Maharashtra Anti-Tobacco Act and for cheating and forgery. During interrogations they revealed that they were working for an old time smuggler Usman Gani alias Gachi. "During investigations it was found that Gacchi had smuggled the branded ciggrettes worth Rs 4.5 crore which was supposed to be supplied to wholesellers at Crawford Market.

While the police culled these goats, they had confisticated the dhow and the goods and had anchored the dhow at Hey Bunder under the survillance of two policemen round the clock.

"Recently a gang had stolen several cartoons of confisticated ciggrettes from the dhow. Police would not have learnt about the theft if informer not informed the police," said a source.

Police said that on Friday they have detained two persons and have recovered stolen goods worth few lakhs and further recovery is going on and police are likely to register an FIR of theft by Saturday.

Deputy commissioner of police (pORT) Tanaji Gadge confirmed the news. A high level probe has been ordered and we will go deep into the case and if need arises I will not even spare my policemen or BPT employees involved.
