MUMBAI: Over 55 rare turtles, tortoises and 27 exotic parakeets were rescued by animal activists during a raid at Crawford Market on Thursday.
People for Animals (PFA) and Ahimsa Sangh NGOs had raided the venue with the help of Mumbai police after receiving specific information about the wild species kept there for illegal sale.
""We were tipped off that turtles were being sold illegally in Crawford Market. Our team swung into action, informed the police and rescued the animals. We found the animals stashed into nooks and corners of the market. It was sad and disgusting to see turtles and tortoises (that need to be in water) kept hidden under desks,'' said Chetan Sharma of PFA.
The team found 3 Keeled Back Tortoises, 2 Leather back Turtles (one was found dead due to horrible living conditions), 51 Indian Star Turtles and 3 Malaysian baby turtles. The activists also found 27 Rose Ring and Alexandrine Parakeets.
"Some of these tortoises and turtles are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and hence the selling and buying of these animals is prohibited under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The Keeled Backs are largely found on the Indo-Nepal border. Imagine that these animals are illegally smuggled from there into South Mumbai and then sold at huge profits of over Rs. 5,000 per turtle.'' said Vinamra Sagar of Ahimsa Sangh group.
The offenders were taken to the MRA Marg Police Station and an offence under The Wildlife Protection Act was registered.
