MUMBAI: The Kalyan RTO conducted surprise checks outside the railway station for the past four days and prosecuted 25 errant autorickshaw drivers. The RTO has now cleared the entire station area (main road) West of unscrupulous auto drivers and also removed some of the encroachment.
"We want only authorised autos to stand at the designated stands. They need to maintain discipline. We will discourage drivers from breaking rules and picking up passengers randomly,'' said deputy RTO V R Gujrathi. He has also put up ten notice boards, warning errant auto drivers and appealing to citizen to lodge complaints on his personal mobile number.
"I have offered my mobilephone for receiving complaints from citizens. They can sms the complaint to me and I will look into them on a priority,'' he stated. The number is displayed on the boards put up at Kalyan, Dombivli, Shahad and a few other stations.
The RTO here also plans to organise the stands meant for share routes and also introduce a new stand exclusively for autos plying by the e-meters. "It will take some time to change the lawlessness by drivers at Kalyan and beyond. We will make a presentation to the transport commissioner on what steps can be incorporated to provide a citizen-friendly auto service in Dombivli-Kalyan and other areas upto Badlapur,'' another official, who did not wish to be named said.
An auto union leader alleged that the RTO too harassed rickshaw drivers.
