BANGALORE: The Bangalore International Airport, Karnataka tourism ministry, Coffee Board, and tour organizer Thomas Cook have come together to showcase Karnataka's and South India's coffee culture to domestic and international tourists.

The Kaapi Trail, as the programme is called, is a holiday package that offers tourists a range of activities that include: learning about the history of coffee and the processing of the bean; engaging with the local culture, traditions and cuisine; stays in ancestral homes, plantations, and resorts; mountain treks and cycling tours; visits to ancient temples and palaces; wildlife jeep safaris; and visits to the Tholpety and Bhadra Sanctuaries.

"South India has much to offer today's traveller who is hungry for unique and meaningful experiences," said Madhavan Menon, MD, Thomas Cook India.

The Kaapi Trail packages have been categorized into leisure, heritage and adventure trails that criss-cross through the coffee growing regions of Coorg, Chikmagalur, BR Hills, Baba Budangiri, Travancore, Nilgiri Hills, Palani Hills, Shevroy Hills and the Araku Valley.

"We want tourists to be aware of an entirely new side of the region," said Sanjay Reddy, MD of the Bangalore airport. He said initiatives like Kaapi Trail were part of the airport's strategy to promote Bangalore as the gateway city to South India.

Arvind Jadhav, additional chief secretary in the Karnataka tourism department, said, "With Bangalore being centrally located, with easy access to several exotic and scenic locations, it makes a great stopover for travellers looking to explore the region."

A six-day tour is priced at Rs 28,000 to Rs 32,000 per person.
