MUMBAI: An accused facing trial in the alleged fake encounter case of Lakkhan Bhaiyya suffered a heart attack during court proceedings on Tuesday. The accused Aqeel Sheikh was rushed to JJ Hospital. Court sources said that Sheikh underwent an angioplasty on Wednesday and his condition is stable.
The accused in the case are brought to court everyday as the trial is being conducted on a day to day basis.
The prosecution so far has examined over 100 witnesses including police offices and the victims family members. The court is currently hearing the final arguments in the case. A judgement is expected in March.
On Nov 11, 2006, alleged Chhota Rajan aide Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya was killed in an encounter at Versova. As many as 22 perosons including 14 policemen are facing trial in the case.
At the time of his death, Gupta had 19 cases registered against him. Of which 12 were of murders. The Bombay High court in February 2008 ordered magisterial inquiry into the encounter; in August 2009 the magistrate submitted the report which said he had been in fact murdered in cold blood. The High Court later formed a Special Investigation Team, which arrested cop Pradeep Sharma and other police officers.
