MUMBAI: Four criminals, who had shot dead a police constable from Bihar and were on the run since December 21 were arrested in Thane district. They have been handed over to their Bihar counterparts.

On December 21, 2012, the four suspects had snatched the service revolver of constable Gangesh Kumar (25) and shot him in his head in the Rodha police chowky in Samastipur district of Bihar. The motive behind the killing is unclear.

The Bihar police recovered the pistol after the incident. A special task force (STF) comprising police personnel from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh was formed to trace the killers.

The Bihar police got a tip off that the criminals had come down to the temple town of Shirdi in Maharashtra. The police got little success in tracking them there. Later the police got information that the four had asked their associates in Bihar to deposit cash in a bank account in Bhiwandi.

The Thane police took custody of the person in whose name the account stood and money was transferred. By this time the four had left for Kalyan to board a train. A police team laid a trap around Kalyan railway station where they were nabbed.

The arrested accused were identified as Amitkumar Jha, Navnitkumar Singh, Deva Panjiar and Roshankumar Panjiar.

On Wednesday, the Bihar police officials, along with eight commandos in tow, took the custody of the quartet and left for Samastipur.
