The woman tweeted that she and her mother hired a black-and-yellow from Five Bungalows in Matunga to Dadar and noticed the driver behaving strangely. She claimed the cabbie was mentally unstable. He would suddenly laugh hysterically and light a wax image on the dashboard, extinguish the flame and then light it again. He did this six-seven times while driving, which alarmed the duo.
After reaching Dadar, she posted her experience on Twitter and immediately got advice from friends and a few groups to approach the cops. She replied, "I am safe, but I have the cab number and may lodge a complaint with police."
A senior RTO official said she should lodge a complaint on the toll-free number 1800-22-0110 or inform the Tardeo RTO, which can suspend the errant driver's licence.
"This is disgusting. Such drivers should be booked and not allowed to ply cabs," said Shreya Majumdar, who occasionally travels by cabs at night.
In February, transport commissioner Mahesh Zagade directed taxi operators to instal panic buttons in taxis for the safety of women following a woman executive's rape in a cab last December. During an emergency, the passenger can press the switch, which will trigger an alarm through GPS and alert the police as well as the aggregator's control room. Most taxi aggregators, like Bookmycab, are installing the buttons in 1,500 kaali-peelis and 500 Cool Cabs. "We studied the feasibility of the switches and decided to instal them," said Avinash Gupta of Bookmycab. tnn
