A report on H West ward states that 1,934 hawkers will be accommodated in the Bandra-Khar belt. The residents' grouse has been that the authorities have marked hawking pitches in those areas that don't even have a footpath.
Corporators are upset that areas near schools have been marked as hawking zones. KC Marg, Bandra Reclamation, 14th Road, 27 Road, Hill Road, Manuel Gonsalves Road, St John Baptist Road, 31st road have been delineated as vending zones.
Corporator Asif Zakaria said hawking zones seem to have been marked "selectively". One hundred and fifty pitches have been marked out on Hill Road (between Kohinoor cycle store and Balaji restaurant) on a footpath that is five ft wide.
"In the report, they have claimed that these pitches have been marked on a five ft-wide path. However, what is surprising is that there is no footpath at all in our area. Authorities should decide if footpaths are meant for hawkers or pedestrians. We have put in extra efforts to keep our area hawker-free and the authorities cannot mark pitches without even informing us," said Madhu Poplai, secretary of Pali Hill Residents Association. Civic officials have said they marked the zones after forming a committee that conducted a detailed survey. The committee considered all aspects of the locality, said an official from H west ward.
Recently, NGO Nagar had demanded that lists of proposed vending zones be uploaded on its website so that residents and local citizens groups can scrutinize them. They also wrote to associate organizations, urging them to study the proposed vending zones in their areas and write letters to the civic chief.
