MUMBAI: A day after a Mumbai police head constable Dharma Karokhe was found in possession of 110 kilograms of mephedrone at his Satara home, the city police and the narcotics cell on Tuesday recovered 12kg drug white crystal translucent from Karokhe's personal almirah in the Marine Drive police station room. Karokhe, suspect investigators, used to peddle the drug business from the police station itself. While proceedings for his dismissal have begun, several heads are likely to roll. An inquiry has also been ordered to look into how Karokhe smuggled the drugs into the police station without anyone knowing about it.

Soon after the Satara police detained Karokhe and found a huge consignment of the banned drugs at Karokhe's house in Satara, they informed their Mumbai counterparts. A team led by Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police, south region, in the presence of two government witnesses searched the almirah recovered the drugs. Meanwhile, Rakesh Maria, police commissioner, has directed to initiate an action under article 311(2) for dismissal of Karokhe. Once the proceedings are completed, Karokhe will be dismissed from the police force. Almost a decade ago, another Marine Drive police constable Sunil More was dismissed from the force after his arrest on charges of raping a college girl inside a police chowky. He was convicted and sentence 12 years in jail.

Karokkhe was part of the intelligence wing of the Marine Drive police station. He was on 10 days leave saying his father had passed away. Sources said that working on an information, the the Satara police on Monday planned a raid to seize huge consignment of mephedrone or M-Cat or also known as meo meo drug. The police laid a trap near a house in Kanheri village in Khandala taluka, Satara. When a policeman knocked the door, they were shocked to see a policeman, Karokhe. He told the raiding team that it was a case of mistaken identity and that he himself was from the police force and someone might have given wrong input to the Satara police. The raid police was not convinced with the way Karokhe spoke to them and they decided to search the house. The raid led them to the seizure of 110 kilograms of mephedrone, packed in small plastic bags and concealed in a travel bag. Mephedrone is sold in small quantities of 1 gm for Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 and the highest concentration of the drug is in south Mumbai.

The Satara police are investigating the case and trying to establish if Karokhe was a drug peddler or just a courier man. "It's a serious offence. We need to thoroughly interrogate him to find out the source of contraband and whom it was to go to," said an officer.

"I have ordered the additional commissioner of police to inquire into the case and how the contraband was smuggled into the police station," said Maria. Senior officials indicated several changes at the police station and above level officers.
