MUMBAI: An online corporate fitness initiative has donated Rs 1.5 lakhs to the Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children in Mumbai. The funds will be used to build a new paediatric cardiac unit that will provide state-of-the-art facilities for the treatment and care of underprivileged children who suffer from congenital heart disease.
Stepathlon, as it is called, is a "virtual race" that encourages people to take 10,000 steps each day. The race hopes to generate health awareness among corporate professionals globally. It is now in its third year, and claims that during this period, one lakh employees from 500 organisations in 34 countries have participated in this race.
The race is a pedometer-based initiative. It is created in a virtual world and has been designed to suit all kinds of companies, big and small. In 2014, 60,250 people participated. The aim is to break the cycle of sedentary behaviour and become more healthy and productive.
Dr Minnie Bodhanwala, CEO, Wadia Hospitals, said, "This act of kindness will make a big difference to the lives of these children. More than 3,00,000 children are born with congenital heart problems and there is a crying need for early intervention. We appreciate this contribution and are glad that organisations such as Stepathlon are successfully fulfilling their social responsibilities."
Ravi Krishnan, CEO, Stepathlon, said, "Several children suffer from heart-related ailments and the rural population and urban poor find there aren't enough funds or facilities to help them. We hope our contribution helps address this issue."
