There is a surge in calls related to assault cases, say officials. The 24-hour helpline (9833331111) is manned at the additional direction general (railways) office.
"We helped retrieve an excess of Rs 5.56 lakh in 2014 as compared to the year before. An excess of 255gm gold and 16 cellphones were also recovered," said a GRP official. "On being alerted about forgotten valuables, we instantly forward the information to the nearest GRP chowky. But there are instances where a train pulls out of the station even before our personnel can reach," said an official.
"In some cases, passengers get confused and are unable to recount the exact coach or train in which they have left behind their valuables," he added. The GRP is required to follow a standard procedure before a retrieved piece of luggage can be handed back to its owner. This includes crosschecking the owner's identity and recording his details and statement for future reference. Officials cite several cases where personnel have returned valuables that cost as much as their half-yearly salary.
