Villages near Kalyan stay out of zilla parishad poll

KALYAN-DOMBIVLI: Politicians and voters from 27 villages in the Kalyan rural area have boycotted the January 28 zilla parishad election. The last day for filing nomination was Tuesday, and only one nomination was received from the villages by end of deadline. Residents of the 27 villages first want the state government to fulfil its promise of including them in the municipal corporation or create a new council.

"The election will not be possible in these villages," Kalyan tehsildar Kiran Suravase said. "We also received an appeal from candidates that they do not want to contest elections and are boycotting it."

Villagers from Titwala's vicinity also plan to boycott the polls for the same reason.
