MUMBAI: CM Devendra Fadnavis has followed PM Narendra Modi and issued stringent guidelines for appointing staff for ministers.

The general administration department, led by Fadnavis, on Monday promulgated a one-page order, saying there will be a ban on appointment of private secretary, officer on special duty and personal assistant for ministers who had worked with cabinet members of the previous Congress-NCP government.

"If the private secretary, officer on special duty or personal assistant has worked for 10 years with a cabinet member of the previous Congress-NCP government, then s/he should not be appointment. If s/he has already been appointed, then her/his appointment should be cancelled," a senior bureaucrat said.

When Modi took over the reins, he had made it clear on his first day in office that no staff from the previous government should be appointed for ministers. After Fadnavis took over on October 31, he too was planning to issue a similar order, but was in two minds due to pressure from cabinet colleagues. But ignoring the pressure, Fadnavis on Monday asked the general administration department to issue a specific order.

The order assumes significance as it is the first time that such a directive has been issued. Fadnavis predecessor, Prithviraj Chavan, too made several attempts to shunt out private secretaries, personal assistants and officers on special duty, who were camping in Mantralaya for more than a decade, but did not succeed.
