MUMBAI: Fifty years ago when Pope Paul VI became the first holy father to visit India, he urged Christians to engage in inter-faith dialogue, because no religion was superior to another. Leaders of the faith are marking the golden jubilee of his arrival by stressing the message of unity.

Since November, a series of liturgical and cultural events is being held to mark the golden jubilee of the pope's arrival for the Eucharistic Congress celebration. The grand finale will be on Sunday at the Don Bosco School grounds in Wadala.

"Archbishop of Bombay Oswald Cardinal Gracias will focus on the contribution of Catholic institutions to nation-building, especially in education and healthcare," Fr Nigel Barrett, spokesman of the Catholic Church, said.

The papal nuncio, who represents the Vatican, will come from Delhi. Governor C Vidyasagar Rao will be present.

"We are hosting a three-hour ceremony from 5 pm to 8.30 pm," Fr Nigel said. "The cardinal will lead a special mass that will be followed by a cultural programme of music and dance."

On Monday evening, a three-hour celebration was held at St John the Evangelist Church in Marol, Andheri. Organizer Fr Ryan Alex focused upon the youth.

"Around 500 Catholics from all parts of the city arrived to discuss how they can become better Christians ...," Fr T P Lonappan said.

He said president S Radhakrishnan had welcomed the holy father and AIR had prepared a half-hour documentary on the seer's visit.
