Encouraged by the return of Majeed, who left his Kalyan home with three others in May to join ISIS in Iraq, the family of one of his friends still in Iraq has approached the Narendra Modi government seeking its intervention to bring their son back. Officials conceded gaining access to him may prove far more difficult as he is in middle of the "liberated" ISIS zone.
While Majeed is said to have done menial jobs like cleaning toilets and masonry at Mosul before being handed an AK-47 and sent to Raqqa, the other three Kalyan boys, including the one whose rescue has been sought, continue to work as cooks for ISIS fighters in Iraq. Majeed told his interrogators that he split from his friends—Shaheen Tanki, Fahad Shaikh and Aman Tandel—soon after reaching ISIS territory, but was in touch until he left Iraq for Turkey after bullet/splinter injuries. The only other Indian Majeed claimed to have met there was a youth from a Gulf country. He also denied knowledge of the 39 Indians abducted by ISIS.
Majeed, sources told TOI, remains unapologetic about joining ISIS and claims he would have fought on but for his injuries, which led him to Turkey for medical treatment, and "family pressure". At the same time, he conceded that Indian recruits were not given combat duties by ISIS as they were not considered "to be made of good stuff" compared to the battle-hardened Afghans, etc.
