Film critic Anupama Chopra, the giggly, gentle moderator of the session, began by doing what Kapur thought was "the worst thing to do to someone onstage"—announce that it was his birthday. The birthday boy returned the favour by leaving Chopra groping for practical answers. Kitted out in formals and a pair of sneakers, Kapur, who called himself "an adventurer, not a filmmaker" served up a series of heartfelt, evangelical one-liners to many of her questions about a good story, each of which got a ready applause.
Banerjee, who listened to the director of Bandit Queen with the fascination of a fan boy, felt that deception was an important element of a good story. Banerjee, who aches for his daughter's satisfied sigh at the end of his stories, said he first leads the story of the two monkeys in the direction his daughter wants him to and later tricks her by steering the story his way.
"The greatest storyteller is one who loses himself," said Kapur, adding that while he prepares like a general before going on set, he consciously distracts his mind by listening to, say a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song, to create "panic" and hence, creativity.
