Gangster Satam’s kin targets builder for extortion, held

MUMBAI: A nephew of fugitive gangster Guru Satam who was threatening a city based builder to pay up extortion sum of Rs 50 lakhs was arrested by the city crime branch on Saturday.

Narayan Satam alias Pankaj (32), who is a resident of Parel was arrested after he arrived at a particular spot in Parel to accept the first installment from the representatives of Sumer builders. According to the police, since past two weeks, the Pankaj had been calling Sumer builder's office at Prabhadevi from the international numbers and was asking to put its director Rahul Shah on line.

When the staff refused, he threatened them. When the staffer asked him who he was, the caller told him to google Guru Satam on the internet and find who he was and left some international numbers. "After a few days Satam yelled at the staffers as to why Shah was not coming on the line and threatened to shoot him and demanded Rs 50 lakhs. Shah approached the Anti Extortion cell and express fear and sought police help." Said an officer.

Satam again called up Shah and gave a contact number saying that the payments should be made to him. On November 26, one man identifying himself Sunil called up Shah and told that he was Satam's man and demanded money. Shah as directed by the police agreed to pay him Rs 10 lakhs. The team of AEC laid by inspector Vinayak Vast laid a trap in a cool cab where a man came to a particular spot to accept the first installment. No sooner that he arrived police team cornered him and arrested him. The accused was later identified as Narayan Satam, the nephew of fugitive gangster Guru Satam. In 2010, police had arrested another nephew Sachin Shete in similar extortion case.

Narayan police said is a school drop out and is a jobless but since few years he was taking instructions from his uncle and was threatening targets in Mumbai.
