Congress corporator disqualified over caste certificate

MUMBAI: Congress corporator of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Mohammed Qureshi has been disqualified over his caste certificate.

Qureshi had won the August 2012 civic polls in the Other Backward Caste (OBC) category from ward number 32 of Mira Road.

The defeated BJP candidate Dr Suresh Yevele had challenged Qureshi's caste in the Bombay high court.

The court directed the Divisional Caste Certificate Verification Committee at Konkan Bhavan to verify the certificate.

On Monday, the committee informed the civic administration that the caste certificate was invalid, following which the municipal commissioner Suresh Lakhe disqualified Qureshi.
Civic sources said that Qureshi who enjoyed the perks of a corporator will have to pay over Rs 2 lakh to the municipality.

The disqualification has brought down the strength of the Congress in the MBMC from 19 to 18. This may have an effect on the mayoral and deputy mayoral election of the MBMC.
