The traditional battle here has been between BJP and Congress, but this time, Sena and NCP have to be contended with.
Sitting MLA and Congress candidate Jagannath Shetty faces a tough competition from three opponents, though a total of 22 candidates are in the fray. The three are: BJP candidate and F-North ward corporator Tamil Selvan, NCP candidate and Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board chairman Prasad Lad, and Sena nominee Mangesh Satamkar.
"I am sure it is going to be a hat trick win for me. In the 10 years that I have served the constituency (re-constituted in 2009 after delimitation), I have addressed most issues that the public brought to me. I will continue doing so," said Shetty. The constituency has a lot of slum pockets, which are believed to be Congress vote banks.
BJP candidate Selvan is expected to make an impact, but risks a dent in his vote share by Sena. "Various issues like the need for open spaces, parks and good civic infrastructure have not been resolved by the sitting MLA. I have done much more in the capacity of a corporator. So, I am positive that my work will speak for itself," said Selvan. Sion's huge South Indian and Punjabi populations came out in support of Selvan in the civic polls and he is expecting their support this time too.
NCP's Lad believes his "clean image" as the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board chairman is what has gained him popularity. With his promises of water supply and adequate education facilities in the slum areas if elected, Lad is banking on their votes. "The slum population in the constituency has increased tremendously. Slum problems range from hygiene, sanitation, law and order issues and development. I have promised to give five issues utmost priority if I am elected: education, security, development, cleanliness and health. The sitting MLA has not been able to solve issues and faces anger of voters," said Lad.
What might work against Shetty is his old age as compared to the others. Also, activists from the area accuse him of not being reachable.
Standing against Lad is his close friend Satamkar, who has served three terms as corporator in the area. Had the Sena-BJP and Congress-NCP alliances been intact in the polls, Satamkar and Lad would not have faced each other.
