MUMBAI: A police sub inspector attached to Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai crime branch was caught by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 in Borivli on Sunday.

Police inspector Prakash Patil has been booked under the prevention of corruption act and police are now carrying out searches of his house. According to the ACB, the complainant in the case is a businessman identified as Mehta who is into manufacturing and trading plastic bags. In 1999, a EOW had registered cases of cheating and forgery against him.

In 2001 police filed the chargesheet against Mehta's two companies and sealed its properties. Now inspector Patil approached Mehta saying that the investigations were going on and he will also include few of his other properties where he had allegedly invested his money. He also threatened to book more persons connected with Mehta. When Mehta approached him, Patil demanded a sum of Rs 2 lakhs to keep his mouth shut. However later he agreed to accept Rs one lakhs in two installments. And on Sunday when he accepted the first installment of RS 40,000, the ACB sleuths caught him.
