Edited excerpts from the interview:
NCP leader Ajit Pawar wants a probe into your decisions and has threatened to use the RTI Act...
Ajit Pawar is a free citizen. He can use the RTI Act or file a PIL against my government's decisions. I am not afraid since my conscience is clear. When he was the deputy CM, all information was just a phone call away; there was no need for him to wait for so long.
He alleges that you favoured a few builders and that he did not see your signature on the files....
When I took the state's reins in 2010, I found a nexus between leading builders and politicians. Politicians were exploiting the loopholes and ambiguity in rules. In the last 2.5 years, we introduced new rules and approved proposals in the real estate sector based on those. During the 44 months I was in office, I cleared 37,000 files. Each of these I signed. It is unfortunate that Ajit Pawar did not see my signature. Incidentally, most files were first signed by Ajit Pawar and then forwarded to my office. A look at the last 10 years' official records will show that I cleared the most files.
BJP leader Nitin Gadkari said you approached him in 1999 for entry into BJP?
Gadkari is misleading people. I have seen his statement and am initiating civil and criminal proceedings against him for providing wrong information. I never met Gadkari. I did not even know who he is. I came to know about him after he was elected BJP president. I am a born Congressman. Why should I think of joining BJP?
President's rule has been imposed in the state...
In my opinion, it was a conspiracy between NCP and BJP. I was surprised at the Centre's decision to impose President's rule, particularly when the governor had asked me to continue as caretaker CM. It was wrong for the NCP (to withdraw support), since it ended up giving the government's keys to Narendra Modi.
Modi is addressing a series of rallies in the state...
He is free to do so. But seeing their large number, it appears that BJP is unsure of victory. It does not have a face in the state, so the party is projecting Modi.
How you see Modi's approach towards Maharashtra?
His attitude towards Maharashtra and Congress-ruled states is not positive. We have been requesting him for a meeting to discuss key issues, but so far there has been no response from the PMO.
What will be the assembly polls' outcome?
Congress will secure a clear majority. The people of Maharashtra will vote in a single party, Congress, since they too are tired of a coalition government. The era of coalition politics is over.
Do you still blame Ajit Pawar for the collapse of the Congress-NCP tie-up?
NCP terminated the alliance because of the overambitious Ajit Pawar. NCP submitted such unrealistic demands that were unacceptable to us.
