Modi for united Maharashtra, but BJP still in favour of smaller states

NASHIK: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday strongly rebutted Shiv Sena's charge that BJP was plotting to split Maharashtra but only at the cost of blurring his party's consistent advocacy for the creation of a separate state of Vidarbha.

"Is there anyone born yet who can divide Chhatrapati Shivaji's Maharashtra? Without Mumbai, there's no Maharashtra, and without Maharashtra, there's no India," Modi said after Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray alleged a fresh conspiracy to take Mumbai out of Maharashtra.

"Till the time I am in Delhi, I assure you nobody will break up Maharashtra," Modi said referring to Uddhav's statement that the BJP's model of development included breaking the state into smaller parts.

While Modi sounded unambiguous in ruling out any attempt to partition Maharashtra or take Mumbai out of it, his assertion carried the risk of muddying the party's stand on Vidarbha. BJP, in keeping with its support for smaller states, has supported the demand for statehood for Vidarbha.

Modi made no reference to the BJP's stand on a separate Vidarbha which sparked off speculation over what he had said was related only to Mumbai or extended to ruling out Vidarbha as well.

The confusion led Union law minister Ravishankar Prasad to reiterate party's stand for Vidarbha. "We are in favour of smaller states. We have been advocating this for long. What prime minister said was with reference to Mumbai," Prasad said in Pune.

BJP was responsible for the creation of smaller states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand which were hived off Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and UP.

Prasad also responded to MNS chief Raj Thackeray's charge that BJP was trying to lure industrialists based in Mumbai to shift to Gujarat at an election rally. MNS chief's statement came in the wake of Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel's appeal to Maharashtra-based industrialists to expand their operations to Gujarat. "Chief ministers of all states seek investments. A chief minister always makes such appeals and there is nothing wrong in that. It does not mean at the cost of Maharashtra," Prasad said.

The day saw Modi continuing with his attack on Congress. "Election fever is making people on the verge of defeat speak lies. Congress leaders believe in spreading lies till the time people start believing them. But this will not happen now," Modi said.

Describing the Congress-led government in Maharashtra as "murderer of farmers", the PM said the state government led by the Congress was responsible for the "suicide of farmers because of failed promises and inability to understand their issues".

On NCP chief Sharad Pawar's statement that Modi was taking sabhas even in talukas, Modi said it only reflected the manner in which the "two" parties were pained by the huge turnout at his rallies.

"The number of people attending the rallies to listen to me is causing restlessness among other parties. For me, being among the masses is a matter of pride," Modi added.
