Different BMC, basilica timings confuse Bandra Fair visitors

MUMBAI: Bandra has been crowded from the last few days on account of the ongoing annual Bandra Fair, which is known to attract lakhs of pilgrims and devotees. However, the different timings put up by the basilica authorities and BMC has created confusion with a lot of devotees to turning up at the basilica after the 10pm deadline.

On Wednesday, the basilica was forced to remain open beyond its prescribed timings on account of the huge crowd coming in after 10pm. One of the organizers said, "Many people who come to the basilica want to visit the fair as well. Going by the timings put up on the BMC website for the fair, they presume that the church too would remain open till 11.30pm, which is not the case."

While a board put up outside Gate no 2 of the basilica says that the church closes at 10pm, point no 19 of the BMC final policy for Bandra Fair 2014 on its website says -the fair is open from 5.30am-11.30pm.

Msgr Nereus Rodrigues, rector of the Mount Mary Basilica, said there are ushers and volunteers doing different kinds of work like crowd management and traffic control throughout the day and they too need to leave for the day. "With devotees coming in with so much faith, we do not feel like turning them away and hence have to keep the basilica open till the time they are coming. However, our deadline of 10pm remains."

Meanwhile, assistant municipal commissioner Prashant Sapkale of H (West) ward said they are concerned only with the Bandra Fair timings. "As per our final draft policy, the fair remains open 11.30pm and the basilica may choose to shut as per its discretion."

Meanwhile, large crowds gathered for a Tamil mass at 11.30am on Thursday morning with over 50 large buses bringing devotees from different parts of the city, bringing in about 3,500 to 4,000 people.
