Bank staffer held for heist says kingpin duped her

MUMBAI: The bank officer arrested for aiding the recent Canara Bank heist claimed that the kingpin, Hrishikesh Barikh (33), executed the burglary without her knowledge. Bhavna Bane (53) said she had told Barikh to wait for her signal to execute the crime, the Ghatkopar police said.

After the burglary, Barikh travelled in the general compartment of a train to reach Orissa where he deposited the stolen booty—Rs 55.4 lakh—in 19 different saving accounts. The case was cracked on September 10 with the arrest of Barikh, Bane and the two key makers.

Barikh executed the burglary, using 3 sets of 11 duplicate keys, a couple of days before the agreed date (when the bank officer had told him to strike) with the sole intention of denying her a share of the loot. "Bane was shocked to see the burglary executed on August 25 when she walked in to the bank on August 26. Barikh had fled without sharing the loot with Bane," said senior inspector Rajaram Vhanmane.

Barikh had gained access to the bank as he used to supply tea there. He got hold of the keys of Canara Bank in 25 days after offering to pay a commission to Bane.

He further said: "Barikh confessed that he had learnt the tricks of bank heist from a bank manager of Dena Bank (Shivaji Park branch) when he used to supply tea there in 2006. He executed the first offence in front of the bank manager who provided him with duplicate keys. In the first heist, the bank manager had paid Barikh Rs 5 lakh. The second heist, too, was planned by the bank manager but Barikh betrayed him after he executed the heist a few days earlier than the decided date just like the Canara Bank burglary."

Before executing the heist, Barikh used to tell his wife and parents at Panvel that the company he works for is sending him on an official tour for a few days to some other city. He would then shift to a house he rented. Once the burglary is executed, he would flee the city.

Since 2006, Barikh has robbed six banks across the city of nearly Rs 2 crore, using the same modus operandi. On September 24, all four accused will be produced before the court after completing 14 days' police custody. "The other police stations—Shivaji Park and Govandi—will take Barikh's transit remand to get details of the bank officials who helped him to execute the previous five heists," said the investigators. "All six times, he was lucky in not getting frisked at railway stations," they added.
