MUMBAI : Most of us are aware that the common phrase, 'choodiyan pehen rakhi hai kya?' is used to denote cowardice, or emasculation in a man. And this is what disturbed the sensitive thought process of artist Kisalay P Vora. He questions, "Why are bangles used to denote weakness, shame, and inferiority? It is an insult and belittles all that is feminine."

Even Jhansi Ki Rani, a fearless warrior and a mother, was referred to as, 'Khoob ladi mardani woh to...' Why mardani, he goes on to ask, adding, "Can only a mard be fearless? I have seen women in the society being powerful but why do they have to be referred to as 'mardani'?In his quest to eradicate this thought process that is embedded deep into the psyche of all women, Kisalay, has chosen to use his art to create pride and self-respect in them. "I am an artist and I have this need to give back to the society. Using bangles as my medium I want to start a dialogue that removes the shame attached to them. There is a series of art works that I have done usingbangles.

The artist in me saw the beauty, and the pride in this. I want to celebrate bangles as a symbol of strength."
