September 14, which was the feast day, saw over 2 lakh people visiting the shrine and on weekdays, over 50,000 reached the fair each day. The basilica authorities had organized one mass everyday in the morning on weekdays in languages like Konkani, Marathi, Tamil and Malayalam. On Saturday, the mass would be celebrated in Gujarati at 11.30am.
"For the weekend, we have increased the number of ushers by 30, taking the total number to 90. We have also assigned volunteers to keep a check on security arrangements. Miscreants take advantage and indulge in thefts and robberies, taking advantage of people engrossed in praying. We are taking all possible precautions," said vice-rector of the basilica, Fr Aniceto Pereira.
Civic authorities too are geared up to handle the crowds and teams from K (East) and H (East) wards are expected to be called in to look into the issues like encroachments. A stall owner said they are expecting to make brisk business over the weekend. "On weekdays, the crowd was not much, but we are expecting a huge turnout on weekend. Last Sunday was crowded. This year, people are bargaining a lot for flowers and wax figurines," said a stall owner.
