Thane boy tops SSC after recheck

MUMBAI: A 96% score in Secondary School Certificate (SSC) would've made any student proud, but for Tapan Saraph it just wasn't good enough. So confident was the Thane boy about having done better that he insisted on getting his papers rechecked. Today, he stands vindicated.

Exactly three months after the SSC results were out, there was cheer at the Saraph household this week as the Sreerang Vidyalaya student received his corrected marksheet, making him one of the three top scorers in Mumbai division.

When the results were declared on June 17, Tapan had scored 96% (480/500). "While 96% is a very good score, we were sure something was amiss. Tapan has been the topper in his school for several years. He was sure he had fared much better in mathematics and science, so we decided to apply for verification," his father Shirish Saraph said.

When he received his new marksheet from the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education on September 17, his revised score read seven marks higher at 487/500 (97.4% ).

"I was overwhelmed to see the new marksheet. Science and maths were two subjects I was sure of scoring full marks, so I was surprised at scoring four marks less," he said.

Tapan joins Siddhinita Wandekar from Sharon English High School, Mulund, and Neha Patil, from Canossa High School, Mahim, at the top.

However, the increase in marks in the two subjects did not come at once for Tapan.

"When we got the photocopy of the answer papers, we realized three marks in science were not counted so we got that corrected the same day as there was a felicitation in his school. However, the maths marks remained unchanged," said his father. His new score in science is 99.

Seeing the photocopy of the maths paper, Tapan was sure he was marked wrongly on a High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) problem. So he decided to send the paper for revaluation. "While sending it for revaluation, my school maths teacher added a remark saying I deserved more marks for the problem. The board then granted me four additional marks," said Tapan. He has now scored 100 in the subject. Tapan is currently pursuing science at PES College in Thane and plans to join an IIT.

While the new marksheet has made his family happy, his parents are disheartened that Tapan did not get the recognition he deserved. "Soon after the results, there were so many felicitations and awards given to students who stood first in the school or vicinity. He missed out on all that appreciation," lamented Shirish.

However, board officials said students who have emerged as subject toppers after revaluation will get due credit. "We, anyway, do not announce the overall toppers, but this time we delayed the announcement of subject toppers because we did not want students to lose out. Now that all the revaluation is over, a list of individual subject toppers has been drafted and will be announced shortly," Laxmikant Pande, chairperson, Mumbai division, said.
