The HC refused a plea by consumer rights body Mumbai Grahak Panchayat to stay the fares saying it was not inclined to interfere with a "policy decision'' taken by the state government. The state said that it would take around 45 days to re-calibrate electronic meters of all the autos and taxis in the city.
The Maharashtra government had moved the court with its plans to raise auto and taxi fares in Mumbai and its suburbs by Rs 2. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) proposed that the minimum auto fare should be revised to Rs 17 from the existing Rs 15, while the minimum taxi fare should be raised to Rs 21 from Rs 19.
