HC nod for Rs 2 fare hike for autos and taxis in Mumbai, but only on re-calibrated e-meters

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday gave its go ahead for the Rs 2 fare hike for autos and taxis in Mumbai. A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice A S Chandurkar however made it clear, based on the state's assurance, that only those autos and taxis which have re-calibrated the electronic meters to reflect the new fares would be able to charge the hiked priced from passengers. The court also asked the state to take action against auto and taxi drivers, who attempt to fleece passengers, by charging them the hiked fares without getting their electronic meters re-calibrated.

The HC refused a plea by consumer rights body Mumbai Grahak Panchayat to stay the fares saying it was not inclined to interfere with a "policy decision'' taken by the state government. The state said that it would take around 45 days to re-calibrate electronic meters of all the autos and taxis in the city.

The Maharashtra government had moved the court with its plans to raise auto and taxi fares in Mumbai and its suburbs by Rs 2. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) proposed that the minimum auto fare should be revised to Rs 17 from the existing Rs 15, while the minimum taxi fare should be raised to Rs 21 from Rs 19.
