Bafna had told his wife on Sunday evening that he was going to meet a friend in Malad after closing his shops at 9pm. Before leaving he told his servant, who lives in Dharavi, to drop some stuff at his home, the police said.
When Bafna did not return home at night, his family thought he stayed back at his friend's residence. They tried to contact Bafna, but his phone was unreachable in the morning. They called his friends, including the one from Malad, and their relatives but no one knew his whereabouts.
They checked the shops and eventually went to the godown where they found him lying on the floor badly injured. They took him to hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. Bafna had sustained head and other body injuries.
His mobile and the shop keys were missing.
The police are checking who communicated with him before the incident.
"The shops' locks and drawers were broken. He generally did not keep a lot of money in the drawers. But we are checking all angles," assistant commissioner of police Shivajirao Kolekar said. The police are also checking if the accused broke open the locks and drawers to mislead them.
Zonal deputy commissioner Satya Narayan Chaudhary has formed a special team consisting of officers from various police stations to investigate the case.
