MUMBAI: Railways being one of the cheapest mode of transport in Mumbai as well in the world, the Western Railway (WR) has now made an appeal to the tariff authority against hike in power charges.

"The WR is reeling under recent steep hike in electricity charges — as high as 36% to 44%," WR general manager Hemant Kumar said.

The total expenditure on power for 2013-14 on the Mumbai suburban rail network was Rs 234 crore. In fact, the expenditure on power is 25% of total expenditure on Indian Railways.

Sources stated that in order to save costs, Railways has also made a proposal to tap alternate sources of electricity like solar/wind and use them to the fullest. The railways has also approached nuclear power plants to procure 1000 MW or electricity at cheaper rates — which can save 40% of their power purchase costs
