MUMBAI:The auspicious occasion of Lord Jagganth's annual Rath Yatra (Roth Jatra) or the Chariot Festival, saw thousands of devotees participating in it, over the week. And tomorrow, this ongoing festival, will witness the grand finale of sorts, with the culmination of this religious procession.
PK Guha, President of Thane's Jagannath Cultural Education Trust says, "We began the festival, called the Gundicha, on June 29 from Shani Mandir in Manorama Nagar and will be commencing the return journey or the Bahuda, tomorrow from Nageshwar Temple." The festival was first held in Thane five years ago, he informs.
The temple chariot, with deities Lord Jagannath, Balarama, and Subhadra, travelled all through the city.
During the festival, devotees pull the chariot by hand and it is believed that whoever participates will have all his/her wishes fulfiled. Bhajans are sung and mantras chanted, while the rath is pulled.
JK Bhutia, a member of the trust, says there are around a lakh devotees, most of them Odiyas, in the city. Bhog Prasad was distributed during all the nine days, says Guha.
The community will also be hosting a free-for-all socio-cultural programme today evening, at the Kashinath Ghanekar auditorium. "We are working on education, eradication of diseases and helping cancer patients etc. The cultural programme will see an amalgamation of both Maharashtra and Odisha. There will be songs, dances and other entertainment programmes," says Guha.
