Around 8pm last Friday, Kandivli (West) resident Archana Bandal (24) got a call from a man who said he was an employee of the Bank of Baroda, where Bandal has a savings account.
He told her the bank was conducting verification of debit cards of all account holders and asked for the 16-digit number of her card. Bandal complied. Then he asked her to read out her card's three-digit CVV number (printed near the magnetic strip on the back of cards). She did as asked. Finally he asked for her pin number. This triggered Bandal's suspicion.
She cut the call, without revealing the pin. But the damage had been done. "Twelve minutes later, Rs 2,500 was debited from her account. A little while later, Rs 1,999 was debited," said senior inspector Anand Koli of the Charkop police station.
Bandal, who was informed of the transactions on SMS, rushed to an ATM and withdrew Rs 15,000 from her account for safekeeping. But money continued to disappear. "Within 40 minutes of her getting the phone call, Rs 21,999 had been taken out of her account. She went back to the ATM and withdrew the balance, Rs 3,800," Koli said.
On Bandal's complaint, the police registered an FIR on Wednesday.
"We appeal to people to not share personal information with anyone claiming to be calling from a bank or any other financial institution. No bank will ever ask for information like credit or debit card number, ATM pin, and net banking or transaction passwords over phone, SMS or email," said additional commissioner of police (north region) Brijesh Singh on a messaging app. "Don't share personal information with relatives or colleagues either. Keep it confidential; do not scribble or write down passwords on the back of a debit card or a piece of paper. Memorize."
