The Maharashtra government had last week moved the court with its plans to raise auto and taxi fares in Mumbai and its suburbs by Rs 2 from July 10. It came barely a fortnight after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) proposed to hike auto and taxi fares. Since a PIL filed by the Mumbai Grahak Panchayat (MGP) challenging the last round of fare revision in 2012 is pending in the high court, the state was yet to pass a formal order to hike fares.
The Mumbai Rickshawmen's union has also filed a plea in the high court seeking orders to implement the new proposed hike.
According to the MMRTA's proposal, the minimum auto fare should be revised to Rs 17 from the existing Rs 15, while the minimum taxi fare should be raised to Rs 21 from Rs 19. The last round of fare hike happened in October 2012 based on the one-man Hakim committee's report. The MGP—a consumer rights body—had then challenged the fare hike as well as the Hakim committee's report.
