Cops struggle to establish Pune blast link

MUMBAI: A city anti-terrorism squad team (ATS) that reached Pune's bomb blast affected area near Pharaskhana Police Station was puzzled with the making of the 'low intensity' bomb that injured two. While shrapnel were used in the bomb, it was a low intensity bomb with a major plan to create panic among the public. While shrapnel were, in the past, used by Abhinav Bharat allegedly to carry out blasts, the mixture of ammonium nitrate and petroleum was a signature of Indian Mujahideen (IM). No specific terror outfit was named or anyone claimed the responsibility.

The bomb was planted on a bike parked close to the famous Dagdusheth Halwai Temple where an IM member had attempted to plant a bomb in 2010. "Going by the ingredients of the bomb the finger of suspicion points to the modus operandi of IM and Abhinav Bharat. However, it's too early to comment on who could be behind the blast," said an ATS officer. Mumbai ATS officials have left Pune to assist their colleagues in the probe.

The bomb was planted on a bike (MH-11 AQ 7174), registered in Maan Tehsil, Pimpri gaon in Satara district. The vehicle was stolen. The blast took place at 2.30 pm. "IM in the Mumbai's 13/7 blasts had stolen two scooters and two bikes and used the scooters to plant bombs. On other hand, in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast, a bike registered in the name of Sadhvi Praghay Singh Thakur, now in jail, was registered. The RDX bomb was fitted on the bike. In the 2008 Malegaon blast and the explosions executed by IM, IEDs were used.

Cops are puzzled as the most members of Abhinav Bharat and IM are now behind bars and the outfit, opine police, have been crippled down. "With the arrest of over a dozen Abhinav Bharat men and the arrest of IM chief Yasin Bhatkal and his more than two dozen associates belonging to Azamgarh, Aurangabad, Pune and Delhi module there are hardly any big name who has not been traced. We are waiting for the forensic report and will come to a conclusion soon," the officer added.
