‘Sexual torture’ forces teen to attempt suicide

MUMBAI: A 13-year-old Bhandup girl tried to end her life by setting herself on fire on Tuesday, to escape her neighbour's "torture". The accused, Sameer Gugare (28), allegedly forced the girl to watch pornography and even tried to sexually assault her on two occasions in the last three months. The girl, a class 8 student, is battling for her life with 75% burns.

The Bhandup police arrested Gugareon Thursday, on Friday, a day after the girl tried to end her life, after finding a suicide note in the girl's house holding him responsible for her act. Gugare also allegedly confessed to making the survivor's eight-year-old sister watch pornography.

On Tuesday, around 4.20pm, when the survivor was alone at home, she doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire. "She ran out of the house in flames. Neighbours doused the fire and rushed her to Sion hospital. We learnt about the cause for her action on finding the note," said senior police inspector PR Chavan.

Gugare was living alone for the last three months as his wife and child were at her parents' home. "The survivor was facing an ordeal for the last three months from Gugare. Gugare confessed he lured the girl with Rs 50, took her to his house and forced her to watch pornography before he attempted to sexually assault her on two occasions," said Chavan.

In the suicide note, the survivor said Gugare has been harassing her by forcing her to see objectionable pictures. In the note, the survivor said Gugare would follow her to school and when she returned home, he would take her to his place and force her to watch objectionable films. She said she was unable to reveal the matter to her parents as she was scared that her name would get tarnished.

Gugare has been booked under IPC se8ctions 293 (obscenity), 376 (rape) and 354 (outraging modesty of a woman), and under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act section 12 (sexual harassment of a child).
